In short: ElterngeldPlus is at most half as high as basic parental allowance (Basiselterngeld) (€150 to €900 per month), but it is paid twice as long: one basic month becomes two Plus months. If you work part-time after the birth, ElterngeldPlus often gives you almost the same monthly amount as Basiselterngeld – just for twice as long. As of: October 2026.

- Basic parental allowance can only be converted into ElterngeldPlus for the future
- ElterngeldPlus can also be converted into basic parental allowance retroactively

- ElterngeldPlus months with additional income are always approved provisionally at first; after the payment period you must submit the actual proof of income, and the final decision follows afterwards
What is ElterngeldPlus?
ElterngeldPlus is a state benefit in Germany that supports parents financially if they reduce their working hours after the birth of their child or stop working temporarily altogether. This benefit was introduced on 1 July 2015 to give parents more flexibility in combining family and work. It is aimed in particular at mothers and fathers who want to work part-time during parental leave, as it extends the payment period of parental allowance.
While basic parental allowance (Basiselterngeld) is available for a maximum of 14 months, ElterngeldPlus can be received twice as long, i.e. (in theory) for up to 28 months. This gives parents the chance to receive support over a longer period, even if they return to work early.
ElterngeldPlus is an attractive option for parents who earn an income through part-time work, because it compensates proportionally for the resulting loss of income. In contrast to basic parental allowance, which is designed only for the first months of the child's life, ElterngeldPlus allows parents to respond more flexibly to their individual circumstances.
Who should claim ElterngeldPlus?
- Parents who, before the child's first birthday, already receive lower income from employment than before the birth (e.g. part-time income, non-cash benefits or income from self-employment).
- Parents who want to take on care work (looking after the child) without earned income for as long as possible and still want to receive financial support every month.
- Parents for whom receiving basic parental allowance would result in a high additional tax payment (jointly assessed, one parent has a very high taxable income and the other a high maternity pay and parental allowance). With ElterngeldPlus you can spread the payment of the total parental allowance over several (two or three) tax assessment periods. If necessary, switch retroactively to basic parental allowance after the turn of the year so that the remaining amount is paid out directly, but not within just one assessment period.
- Parents who cannot claim another month of basic parental allowance in the child's first year of life because of the ban on parallel basic parental allowance, as the other parent is already claiming basic parental allowance in the relevant month of the child's life.
ElterngeldPlus and basic parental allowance: differences
To make the decision between ElterngeldPlus and basic parental allowance easier, it is important to understand the main differences:
– Payment period: While basic parental allowance is paid for a maximum of 14 months if both parents receive parental allowance, ElterngeldPlus allows payment for up to 28 months. Each month of basic parental allowance is converted into two ElterngeldPlus months. Please note: months of the child's life in which the mother receives maternity benefits count as months of basic parental allowance (no choice), § 4 para. 4 sentence 3 BEEG.
Maternity pay (Mutterschaftsgeld) is offset against parental allowance, i.e. you do not receive parental allowance during this time because you are receiving maternity pay. You still receive the difference in basic parental allowance for the second month of the child's life, or, if the birth took place before the due date, the third, fourth, etc. month, on a pro rata basis.
As a result, mothers can usually only receive ElterngeldPlus from the third, possibly fourth month of the child's life at the earliest, up to the 22nd or 21st month at most.
– Amount of the benefit: The amount of ElterngeldPlus is at most half of the basic parental allowance that parents would receive without part-time income. The advantage is that it can be combined with part-time income without the parental allowance being reduced completely.
– Part-time work: ElterngeldPlus was designed specifically for parents who want to work part-time after the birth of the child. Basic parental allowance, by contrast, is geared towards full income replacement and is used mainly when a parent does not work at all.
A key aspect of ElterngeldPlus is the option of using the partnership bonus months (Partnerschaftsbonus), which give parents further months of financial support if both parents work part-time at the same time for a certain period.
Who is entitled to ElterngeldPlus?
In principle, all parents who meet the requirements for parental allowance are entitled to ElterngeldPlus. In concrete terms, this means parents who live in Germany in the same household as their child, look after and raise the child themselves after the birth, and work no more than 32 hours per week.
ElterngeldPlus is aimed at the following groups of people:
– Employees
– Self-employed people
– Unemployed people (under certain conditions)
– Homemakers
ElterngeldPlus is particularly attractive for parents who want to work part-time or who want to return to work quickly after a shorter break. The option of combining part-time work with ElterngeldPlus is what makes this benefit so interesting for many parents.
Calculating ElterngeldPlus
The amount of ElterngeldPlus depends on the income parents had before their child was born. It is at least €150 and at most €900 per month of the child's life. The calculation is based on an average income from before the birth.
For parents who work part-time while receiving ElterngeldPlus, the income from part-time work is taken into account. ElterngeldPlus covers the loss of income caused by the reduction in working hours. This makes it particularly attractive for parents who do not want to give up their income completely but still want to be financially secure.
A calculation example:
A mother who earned €2,000 net before the birth receives 65% of her income as basic parental allowance, i.e. €1,300 per month. If she opts for ElterngeldPlus and works part-time, she receives only €650 per month (50% of the basic parental allowance), but can earn up to €1,000 net on top without her ElterngeldPlus being reduced.
Example: how parents can distribute their months
Before the birth, the mother had a net income for parental allowance purposes (Elterngeld-Netto) of €2,000, the father €2,500. They would like the mother to stay at home for almost two years and the father to take two months of parental leave.
How the calculation works out: One month of basic parental allowance equals two months of ElterngeldPlus. The mother uses 2 + 20 : 2 = 12 months, the father the 2 partner months – together the 14 possible months. From the 15th month of the child's life, the mother receives ElterngeldPlus without a gap; this is a requirement. If a parent works part-time, ElterngeldPlus can even bring in more money – see parental allowance and additional income. You can plan your own distribution with the parental allowance calculator.

Advantages of ElterngeldPlus
ElterngeldPlus offers a number of advantages, especially for parents who want to return to work “swiftly” after the birth but still need financial support.
– Flexibility: Parents can receive parental allowance for longer and are more flexible about when and how they return to work.
– Combination with part-time work: By combining ElterngeldPlus with part-time work, parents can partly make up for lost income without having to forgo financial support.
– Partnership bonus (Partnerschaftsbonus): The partnership bonus months make it possible for each parent to receive two to four further months of ElterngeldPlus if both parents work between 24 and 32 hours per week at the same time.
– Long-term support: By being able to stretch the payment period to up to 32 months, parents can receive financial support over the long term.
ElterngeldPlus and part-time work
As already mentioned, parents may work up to 32 hours per week (on average over the month of the child's life) while receiving ElterngeldPlus. By combining ElterngeldPlus and part-time work, you can make up for the financial losses caused by the reduction in working hours.
For example, if you worked 40 hours before the birth and only work 20 hours after the birth, ElterngeldPlus helps you bridge the financial difference. This makes it easier to return to work and ensures that parents can maintain their income.
ElterngeldPlus is particularly well suited to parents who want to work part-time during their parental leave. Additional income while receiving ElterngeldPlus is not deducted from the parental allowance in full, but taken into account proportionally. This means that parents continue to receive financial support even if they earn a part-time income again. Please note that additional income can reduce the amount of ElterngeldPlus, but not as much as with basic parental allowance.
It is important that additional work does not exceed the limit of 32 hours per week, in order to keep your entitlement to ElterngeldPlus.
Example: basic parental allowance or ElterngeldPlus with 20 hours of part-time work
Before the birth, a mother had a net income for parental allowance purposes (Elterngeld-Netto) of €2,400. After the maternity protection period she works 20 hours per week and earns €1,200 net.
With part-time work, ElterngeldPlus at €780 per month is just as high as basic parental allowance, but is paid twice as long. One basic month thus becomes two months with the same amount. The values were calculated by our parental allowance calculator; further amounts are shown in the parental allowance table 2026 (in German).
When is ElterngeldPlus worthwhile?
- You work part-time while receiving parental allowance: Then ElterngeldPlus is often almost as high as basic parental allowance, but lasts twice as long.
- You want to receive money for longer: Without income, ElterngeldPlus is half as high, and the total over all months stays the same – this suits you if daycare only starts later.
- Both parents want to work part-time: The partnership bonus (Partnerschaftsbonus) with 2 to 4 additional months per parent is only available as ElterngeldPlus.
- Basic parental allowance suits you better if you do not work at all in the first months and need a high monthly amount. Months with maternity pay count as basic months anyway.
Basic, Plus and bonus months can be combined. The parental allowance calculator shows which distribution brings you the most.

How a mini-job is counted with ElterngeldPlus
A mini-job (in German) while receiving ElterngeldPlus is generally possible as long as the weekly working time of 32 hours is not exceeded, which, because of the Minimum Wage Act, cannot happen. The income from the mini-job is counted as additional income and reduces the ElterngeldPlus amount proportionally, depending on your income before the birth.
It is advisable to calculate the additional income from a mini-job precisely in order to understand how much ElterngeldPlus is deducted. Our parental allowance calculator can help, as it can take this income into account:
ElterngeldPlus application
The application for ElterngeldPlus is made together with the application for basic parental allowance. You submit it after the birth to the responsible parental allowance office (Elterngeldstelle) and state the period in which you want to receive basic parental allowance and/or ElterngeldPlus.
It is advisable to submit the application as soon as possible after the child is born so that you receive your payments as soon as possible. As you only have all the required documents, such as the birth certificate and certificates of maternity pay and part-time income, after the birth, the application cannot be submitted before the birth.
